AR15 Iron Sights: How to Get the Best Out of Your AR 15 Rifle

The AR15 weapon platform has long been the standard when it comes to civilian use. The AR15 has been a favorite for home defense, hunting, or even simple target practice, thanks to its dependability, reliability, ease of use, and its ability to accommodate aftermarket parts and accessories. A stock AR is a powerful tool, but one that’s been kitted out with aftermarket accessories, such as front and rear iron sights, is even more impressive.

AR Iron Sight Set

Our selection of AR15 iron sights can transform your stock AR into something much more accurate and impressive. Our collection of front and rear sights are all machined from rugged aluminum and are designed to fit a standard picatinny rail system, making mounting easy and transforming your AR in a heartbeat. These mounted sights feature a fixed rear sight and a front aperture sight that offers standard adjustment for windage and elevation. Looking for a classic AR look? Our rear sight carry handle is just the thing. We offer more than one set of flip-up sights system as well, making it easy to use rail-mounted optics without having to swap your front and back sight out completely. Simply remove your optics and flip your sights back up and into place when ready. It’s this tactical approach to rear and front sights that distinguishes us from your run-of-the-mill stock shooting accessories provider.  Having the right iron sight can make all the difference when you need it most.

Front and Rear Fixed Sights

Most AR 15s use what is called an A2 front sight. This sight is adjustable for elevation, but not windage. The A2 sight has a post in the center of the front sight that sticks up. When looking through the rear sight aperture, you line up the top of the front post with the marked hash marks on the rear sight. The A2 rear sight is also adjustable for elevation, with two arrows pointing up and down. To adjust, you loosen the two screws on either side of the sight and then slide the sight in the appropriate direction. Many A2 rear sights are not adjustable for windage, however, the rear sight we developed features both a windage & elevation adjustment giving the precision you need.

Flip-up Front Sight

For operators who are looking for a more versatile iron sight, flip up iron sights are a great option. These iron sights can be easily raised and lowered as needed, and they offer a clear sight picture regardless of whether they are up or down. The main advantage of flip up iron sights is that they allow you to use an optic without having to remove your iron sights. This is a great option for people who want the ability to quickly transition from long range to close range, or for people who want to be able to use their iron sights as a backup in case of electronic failure or batteries dying. Our Flip Up Backup Iron Sights are spring-loaded for quick deployment by the press of a button allowing a smooth transition.  A flip-up front sight & flip-up rear sight (flip up sights) are always a good addition to your build.

Offset Sight

For many shooters, the standard iron sights that come with their rifle are just fine. But for those who want to get the most out of their shooting, offset iron sights are a great option. Offset sights are mounted on the side of the rifle, rather than on the top. They're typically offset by 45 degrees. This gives you a better view of the target and the surrounding area allowing for quick target acquisition. It also makes it easier to use optics, such as red dot sights or holographic sights. And because offset sights are low-profile, they are less likely to snag on vegetation or other objects when moving through brush. Whether you're looking for a competitive edge or just want to improve your shooting, offset iron sights are worth considering.

FAQs

Are iron sights good on an AR?

Absolutely.  Whether you add a front sight, folding sights, a rear sight or a set of BUIS, an iron sight set adds a crucial element of optionality to your build when a situation calls for it.

Where do you put iron sights on an AR 15?

Iron sights are mounted to your rail system which is typically a Picatinny or Weaver rail pattern.

Are all AR-15 iron sights the same height?

Not all iron sights are the same height.  Depending on your build and what you are looking to accomplish, this will dictate the model, attributes (including height) that you will want from your iron sights.

Are iron sights worth it?

Iron sights, in our opinion, are a necessity for your build.  They allow you to operate in the event of optic failure and can withstand the harshest conditions.  Not to mention, learning to aim with iron sights is a valuable skill to build.
